Conservative estimates indicate there are just under 81,000 (2018 est.) people living with Parkinson’s in Australia making it the most common major movement disorder and second highest prevalence neurodegenerative condition after dementia.
Pilates for Parkinson’s is a low-cost class offered by Wellwood Health Loganholme to support the members of the Logan community living with neurological diseases such as PD and MS. This activity is funded by Logan City Council’s Move It Logan which received grant funding from the Australian Government through Sports Australia.
Joseph Pilates himself would say “Change happens through movement and movement heals”. Exercise is beneficial for neuroprotection and physical activity can help to prevent the loss of motor ability by protecting the dopamine system. Pilates gives a holistic approach to exercise that focuses on flexibility, balance, coordination, breathing exercises and stress relief. In this specialised class, we will work with specific exercises that can be beneficial to work with rigidity, tremors, walking, balance and postural issues associated with PD. We will be having fun with big movement, vocal exercises, music and games. We will run through exercises that can be easily done at home with family members or carers to continue beneficial movements between classes.
This is a fun, relaxed and supportive class. Carers are welcome to attend for free.
As many people living with PD and MS may be experiencing a higher risk of falls in mid to late stages and depending on individual symptoms, this class may not be suitable in later stages of PD and MS. Please speak with your doctor prior to commencing class and call Wellwood Health if you have any questions or concerns.
